About Us

Our Mission

"From racetrack to renewed purpose—giving horses and humans a brighter future."

Hope For Horses is a nonprofit public benefit corporation dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and re-training horses, with a special emphasis on Off-the-Track Thoroughbreds (OTTBs). Through compassionate care, expert training, and community education, we help these horses transition to fulfilling second careers while promoting the humane treatment and responsible stewardship of all equines. By fostering meaningful connections between horses and humans, we create opportunities for healing, growth, and lifelong partnerships.

Our Story

Hope For Horses was founded in 2013 by Anita Markiewicz out of a deep commitment to helping horses in need. Originally based in California, the organization started by rescuing Pregnant Mare Urine (PMU) mares and foals, as well as Thoroughbreds retiring from racetracks, breeding programs, and those needing rehabilitation after injuries. Over time, the focus shifted toward Thoroughbred aftercare, providing these hardworking horses with a second chance at life beyond the track.

As Hope For Horses grew, leadership transitioned to Grace Purdum, who now serves as President with the same unwavering dedication to the mission. In 2024, the organization fully relocated to Virginia, expanding its reach and ability to help Off-the-Track Thoroughbreds (OTTBs) transition into new careers or enjoy a well-deserved retirement.

Hope For Horses provides a safe landing for horses coming from the racetrack and even other horses coming from neglect, abuse, and financial surrender situations. With a strong volunteer base and a commitment to responsible rehabilitation, retraining, and education, the organization has helped over 800 horses find better futures.

Beyond direct horse care, Hope For Horses is dedicated to educating the public on ethical and proper equine treatment. Through articles, public events, seminars, and hands-on volunteer opportunities, the organization promotes responsible horse ownership and advocacy. By working alongside other rescues and the equestrian community, Hope For Horses is helping to create lasting change for Thoroughbreds and all horses nationwide.
