About Us

Our Mission

“Transitioning from where they were to a better future – both horse and human” Hope 4 Horses is a nonprofit public benefit corporation organized for public, educational and charitable purposes to rescue, rehabilitate and re-train horses, to educate the public with regard to the proper care and humane treatment of horses in handling them on the ground and under saddle.

Our Story

In the verdant heartland of Galt, California, a spark of compassion ignited the inception of Hope For Horses in 2013. Founded by the visionary Anita Markiewicz, this noble endeavor emerged from a profound recognition of the urgent need to provide sanctuary for Pregnant Mare Urine (PMU) mares and foals, as well as Thoroughbreds retiring from the racetracks and breeding facilities, as well as Thoroughbreds in need of rehabilitation after injury. As the years unfolded, Hope For Horses evolved and flourished, guided by the indomitable spirit of its founder, until the mantle of leadership gracefully transitioned to the capable hands of Grace Purdum, who assumed the role of President with unwavering dedication.

From its humble origins, Hope For Horses has burgeoned into a bastion of hope, a renowned Thoroughbred Aftercare Facility that casts its benevolent gaze across the sun-drenched landscapes of California. With each passing year, the organization's resolve to extend its compassionate embrace to more equine souls burns ever brighter, fueled by a steadfast commitment to their welfare.

Hope For Horses, an oasis of solace amidst the tumult of equine adversity, throws its doors open to horses of neglect and abuse cases, extending a lifeline to owners grappling with the agonizing decision to relinquish their beloved companions due to financial constraints, and offering a haven of healing to racehorses yearning for rehabilitation and new beginnings.

Since its inception, Hope For Horses has been a beacon of hope for over 800 equine souls, their lives irrevocably touched by the transformative power of compassion. With a steadfast dedication to their mission, Hope For Horses has transcended geographical boundaries, establishing a Coast-to-Coast presence with facilities nestled in the bucolic landscapes of both California and Virginia.

In its illustrious journey spanning a decade, Hope For Horses has honed its expertise in the delicate art of rehabilitating and retraining Off The Track Thoroughbreds (OTTBs), guiding them on a path of renewal and purpose.

Beyond its sanctuaries, Hope For Horses stands as a paragon of enlightenment, fervently advocating for the ethical treatment and compassionate care of equines. Through a multifaceted approach that encompasses illuminating educational articles, engaging public events, and opening their verdant farms for seminars and volunteer activities, the organization fosters a culture of empathy and understanding. Boasting a vibrant volunteer base spanning all ages, Hope For Horses is a testament to the transformative power of collective action in safeguarding the welfare of these majestic creatures.
